Example: electron-impact excitation of inter-combined transitions in atoms

Electron-impact excitation of the transitions with the change of atomic spin (inter-combined transitions) should be taken into consideration in the modeling of plasma discharge because this process has fairly high cross section especially for the excitation of low-lying metastable electronic energy levels. Inter-combined excitation is optically forbidden phenomenon and for its description one should consider the exchange between incident and atomic electron. Cross section of this process may be calculated in the frame of Born-Ochkur approach. Necessary wave-functions are calculated numerically in the frame of semi-empirical approach by solving radial Schrodinger equation with scaling factor determined by energy of the atomic state. Green-Selin-Zachor potential is used for the description of atomic core electric field.

The results of such calculations are presented below and are compared with experimental data.
